What to Photograph in Winter: December to February

Orion is the obvious answer, and it is the right one. But winter hands a smart telescope four other targets that suit it beautifully, and one that will break your heart if you try it too early.

Winter is when a smart telescope earns its keep. The nights are long enough that you can run three hours of integration and still get to bed at a reasonable hour, the air is often steadier than summer's warm turbulence, and the sky is carrying the richest run of bright deep-sky objects in the whole year. It is also the season most likely to defeat you with cold batteries and dewed optics, which is a separate problem with its own article.

What follows is a running order rather than a list. Each target is chosen because it works at the scale and speed a smart telescope actually operates at, and they are arranged so that a single evening moves west to east across the sky as the night turns.

Start with the Orion Nebula, and then leave it alone

M42 is the first thing almost everyone points a smart telescope at, and there is nothing wrong with that. It is bright enough to show structure in the first sixty seconds of stacking, which is the single most encouraging thing that can happen to a new observer. You will have a recognisable image before your tripod has finished settling.

The trap is that M42 is too bright. The Trapezium core saturates quickly, and by the time you have run an hour of integration to bring out the faint outer wings, the middle is a featureless white blob. Experienced imagers solve this by combining short and long exposures, which most smart telescopes will not do for you automatically.

The practical advice: give it thirty to forty minutes, accept that the core will be blown, and move on. Come back to it later in the season when you are ready to experiment with shorter sub-exposures.[1]

The Pleiades, if your sky is dark enough

M45 is a genuinely awkward target and it is worth being honest about why. The cluster itself is trivially easy: seven bright stars that any telescope will render sharply in a couple of minutes. The reason to photograph it is the blue reflection nebulosity draped around the stars, and that is faint, broad, and extremely sensitive to sky brightness.

From a Bortle 4 site with an hour of integration you will see it clearly. From Bortle 7 with the same hour you will see a hint of haze that could easily be lens flare. This is one of the targets where the drive to a dark site pays for itself most obviously.

A specific warning: the bright stars will produce halos and diffraction artefacts, and light-pollution filters make this worse rather than better, because the nebulosity is broadband reflected starlight rather than emission at specific wavelengths. A filter that helps on the Rosette will actively hurt here.[2]

The Rosette is the season's best smart-telescope target

If you take one recommendation from this article, take this one. The Rosette Nebula in Monoceros is close to the ideal target for a wide-field smart telescope: about the width of three full moons, so it frames beautifully at the focal lengths these instruments use; strong hydrogen-alpha emission, so a dual-band filter helps dramatically; and no crushingly bright core to blow out.

It is also faint enough to be invisible in a single frame, which makes it an excellent demonstration of what stacking does. Watch it emerge from nothing over the first twenty minutes and the square-root law stops being abstract.

Give it as much time as you have. Ninety minutes produces a good image. Three hours across two nights produces something you will want to print.

The Flame and Horsehead, with a warning

Just below Orion's belt sits the most photographed pairing in the sky and the one most likely to disappoint a beginner. The Flame Nebula is straightforward. The Horsehead is a dark nebula, silhouetted against faint emission, and it demands both dark skies and real integration time.

The complication is Alnitak, the belt star sitting right next to them, which is blazingly bright and will throw glare across your frame. Framing matters enormously here: push Alnitak toward the edge or out of frame entirely and the difference in final image quality is dramatic.

Attempt this in your second season rather than your first. Not because it is technically difficult to acquire, but because judging whether you have succeeded requires knowing what a good result looks like.

What winter takes away

Cold does three things to a smart telescope, and only one of them is obvious.

  • Battery capacity collapses. A scope that runs four hours in September may manage ninety minutes at −5°C. This is chemistry, not a fault.
  • Dew forms on the corrector plate, usually about ninety minutes in, and the symptom is a gradual softening you will blame on focus. A dew heater is the single best cold-weather accessory.
  • Focus shifts as the tube cools. Refocus after the first thirty minutes, always. Optical materials contract, and the focus position that was perfect when you set up is no longer perfect once the instrument has reached ambient temperature.

None of these are reasons to stay inside. They are reasons to bring a power bank, a dew strap, and the expectation that you will refocus once.

A workable first winter evening

  1. Set up at dusk, level carefully, and let the scope sit for twenty minutes to reach ambient temperature before you focus.
  2. M42 for forty minutes while the sky finishes darkening. It tolerates twilight better than anything else up there.
  3. Rosette for ninety minutes once full dark arrives and it has climbed clear of the horizon murk.
  4. Refocus, then M45 for an hour if your sky is dark, or a second Rosette session if it is not.
  5. Pack up before the dew wins. Dry the optics indoors rather than in the case.

That is roughly three and a half hours and produces two finished images and one experiment. It is a better night than trying to collect six targets at thirty minutes each, which is the most common mistake in a first winter and produces six images that are all not quite good enough.
