Total solar eclipse over Iceland, Spain and Portugal
The Moon's shadow crosses eastern Greenland, western Iceland, northern Spain and a corner of Portugal. It is the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 1999, and the first over mainland Spain since 1905. - Visible across most of Europe, north Africa and the north-east of North America. Boston sees about 16%, Madrid nearly 100%.

- 2 minutes 18 seconds, over the North Atlantic. The best at a town we list is 110 seconds, at Oviedo.

The longest until 2114: August 2, 2027
The longest total solar eclipse on land this century: over six minutes of darkness across southern Spain, Gibraltar, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia. Nothing this long happens again until 2114.
Maximum totality: 6 minutes 23 seconds, near Luxor in Egypt. Unlike August 2026, the path is a year away and there are still rooms inside it.
