About SmartScope Club

SmartScope Club exists for a specific moment in this hobby: the one where someone buys a smart telescope, points it at the Orion Nebula, gets a genuinely astonishing image in ninety seconds, and then wants to know what happens next.

Almost all astrophotography writing was produced for a different era of equipment, where the hard problems were polar alignment, guiding and mount tracking. Those problems are largely solved by these instruments. The problems that remain are different: which targets suit a wide field, what integration time actually buys you, when a filter helps and when it costs you, and how much a darker sky is really worth.

What we publish

37 guides, organised by what you are trying to do rather than by equipment brand. Seasonal target guides, field notes from sessions that half-worked, gear explainers, and dark-sky travel planning. Every article is written from actual use, states the conditions it was produced under, and cites its sources.

We also maintain pages for 60 US national parks, with observing conditions calculated from their coordinates by our own dark-sky engine.

Who writes it

The site is organised into four desks, each covering a distinct area:

  • SmartScope Dark Sky Desk — Dark-sky travel, light-pollution measurement and the certified places worth driving to. Covers what a Bortle class actually looks like at the eyepiece and how to plan a trip around the moon. [REPLACE: name the author and any IDA or club affiliation before launch.]
  • SmartScope Field Notes — Session write-ups from the field: what was attempted, what the sky did, and what came out of it. Field Notes exists to show the unglamorous middle of astrophotography, the nights that half-work, because those are the ones nobody publishes.   • SmartScope Reviews Desk — Hands-on equipment testing for SmartScope Club. Every review on this desk is written from nights actually spent with the hardware under real skies, with the Bortle class, session length and weather stated so you can judge the result against your own conditions.   • SmartScope Sky Guide — Observing guides and sky-mechanics explainers for people who own a smart telescope and want to understand what it is doing. Aimed at the first two years of the hobby, when the questions are practical rather than technical. [REPLACE: name the author and their teaching or outreach background before launch.]

How the dark-sky data works

The park pages and the app are driven by a dark-sky engine we built and run ourselves. Given coordinates and a date it computes sun and moon events, the length of the astronomically dark window, and object visibility, and pairs that with a weather forecast where one exists.

Astronomy is deterministic and we treat it that way; weather is a forecast, and outside the forecast horizon the engine says so rather than guessing. Weather data comes from MET Norway under CC BY 4.0. Park coordinates come from the US National Park Service. Deep-sky object data comes from the OpenNGC catalogue.

How the site is built

This site is a Python application. Its articles are files in a version-controlled repository, rendered on request. There is no content management system, no editor login, and nothing writable behind the front door.

That is a deliberate choice made after the previous WordPress version of this site was compromised in July 2026 through a REST API vulnerability. Published content that can only be changed through code review removes an entire class of attack.
