Planning a Dark-Sky Trip Around the Moon
The drive is worth it perhaps six nights a month. Picking which six, and what to do when you get there, is the difference between a memorable night and an expensive one.
A trip to a genuinely dark site is the largest single improvement available to most imagers, and it is also the one most often wasted. People drive two hours to a certified dark-sky park on a night with a first-quarter moon, shoot six targets for thirty minutes each, and come home with results barely better than their garden produces.
The planning is not complicated. It just has to happen before you set off rather than when you arrive.
The moon decides the date
Everything else is negotiable; this is not. A dark site under a bright moon is a moderately dark site, and the whole point of the drive evaporates.
The usable window runs roughly from three days after last quarter to three days after new moon, giving you about a week per lunar cycle where the sky is properly dark for most of the night. Outside that window you can still image, but you are working around moonrise or moonset and the calculation changes.
The subtlety people miss: moon phase alone is not enough. A 40% moon that sets at 11pm gives you a superb second half of the night. A 25% moon that rises at 1am gives you a superb first half. Check the rise and set times, not just the illumination percentage.[1]
Choose two targets, not six
The most common mistake at a dark site is treating it like a buffet. You have driven a long way, the sky is full of things you cannot normally reach, and the temptation is to sample everything.
Resist it. The reason to be there is integration time on targets that need dark skies, and a dark site with thirty minutes per target produces exactly the same mediocre results your garden does, just further from home.
Pick one primary target that genuinely needs the dark, a faint galaxy, M33, Markarian's Chain, a dark nebula, and give it two to three hours. Pick one secondary for when the first sinks. That is the whole plan.
Practical trip logistics
Arrive before dark. Setting up in daylight, finding level ground, and identifying where your horizons are blocked is far easier than doing it at 10pm by red torchlight.
Check the site's rules first. Many parks close at dusk, some require permits for night access, and a few have designated astronomy areas. Turning up to a locked gate is a specific and avoidable disappointment.
Bring more power than you need. Covered in the power article: a full night away from mains, running a dew heater as well as the instrument, is a different calculation from a garden session.
Bring warm clothes for the temperature at 3am, not the temperature when you arrive. Dark sites are frequently at altitude and always colder than town.
Tell someone where you are going. Remote, dark, alone, at night, often without mobile signal. This is basic and worth saying.
Red light discipline
If anyone else is at the site, white light is the one thing that will genuinely annoy them. Full dark adaptation takes twenty to thirty minutes and a single phone screen at full brightness destroys it for everyone facing you.
Set your phone to its dimmest red mode before you arrive, keep a red torch within reach, and point headlights away from the observing area when you park. If you need to leave early, plan the exit so your reversing lights do not sweep across other people's sessions.
What to expect from the sky itself
The first time you stand under a Bortle 2 sky, the visual experience will distract you from imaging entirely, and it should. The Milky Way casts shadows. There are so many stars that familiar constellations become hard to pick out.
Budget twenty minutes at the start to just look. Then start the session. Both are the point.
