Big Bend has the darkest measured skies of any national park in the lower 48, a certified International Dark Sky Park where the Milky Way casts visible shadows on moonless nights. It is remote: stock up in Alpine or Marathon. The Chisos Basin amphitheater area balances convenience and darkness, and southern targets unreachable from most of the US ride high here.

What this latitude gives you

From 29.3° north, anything above declination +60.7° is circumpolar here: it never sets, so it is available on every clear night of the year. Anything below declination -60.7° never clears the horizon at all.

Astronomical darkness lasts through every night of the year here, including midsummer, which makes this a rare site for a June or July imaging trip.

At Bortle 1-2 the limiting factor stops being the sky and becomes your equipment and your patience. Faint galaxies, dark nebulae and integrated flux nebulosity are all genuinely reachable here, and an hour of integration goes further than three hours from a suburban garden.
