A Night That Half-Worked: Diagnosing a Session That Went Wrong
Most published astrophotography is the good nights. This is a normal one — two hours, one usable image, and four separate things that went wrong in ways worth naming.
Published astrophotography is heavily filtered. People post the night it worked, which is reasonable, and the effect on someone in their first season is to make an ordinary result feel like failure. So here is an ordinary night, described honestly, with the four things that went wrong and what each one looked like at the time.
Suburban garden, Bortle 6, clear forecast, no moon until well after midnight. Plan: ninety minutes on the Eastern Veil, then ninety on M81 and M82 once they had climbed high enough. Actual outcome: one usable image, one write-off, and a lesson about levelling.
Problem one: the plate solve that would not settle
Twenty minutes lost at the start, and it was entirely self-inflicted. The scope was set up on a slope, roughly levelled by eye, and the bubble was closer to the edge than the middle.
Smart telescopes locate themselves by photographing the sky and matching the star pattern against a catalogue, then use their own levelness and orientation to point. Get the level wrong and the pointing model is wrong, and the instrument repeatedly slews, fails to recognise where it is, and tries again.
The symptom to recognise: repeated slewing with no error message, taking far longer than it did last time. That is almost always levelling, not a fault.
Fixing it properly, moving the tripod onto flatter ground and using the bubble rather than judgement, cost five minutes and solved it instantly. The twenty minutes before that were wasted.
Problem two: focus drifted and I did not notice
The Veil ran for its ninety minutes and produced a perfectly decent result. Reviewing frames afterwards showed the stars were noticeably tighter in the first twenty minutes than the last thirty.
Air temperature fell about six degrees over the session. Metal and glass contract as they cool, the focal point shifts, and a focus that was sharp at setup is soft an hour later. The instrument does not know this has happened, because it has nothing to compare against.
The fix is a habit rather than a setting: refocus roughly thirty minutes in, once the optics have reached ambient temperature, and again if the temperature drops sharply. The cost is two minutes. The cost of not doing it was about a third of a session's sharpness.[1]
Problem three: dew, arriving exactly on schedule
The M81 session started well and degraded steadily. Not cloud, which arrives suddenly and obviously, but a slow softening across twenty minutes, as though the focus were drifting badly.
It was dew on the corrector plate. Air temperature had reached within a degree of the dew point, which had been in the forecast and which I had not checked.
How to tell dew from cloud: cloud makes stars vanish in patches and comes back. Dew makes every star in the frame bloat and soften together, progressively, and never recovers on its own. Shine a red light across the front optic and you will see it.
Without a dew heater the session was over. Wiping the optic buys about ten minutes and risks scratching a coated surface, so it is a last resort rather than a technique.
Problem four: I kept going anyway
The real mistake. Having spotted the dew at roughly the seventy-minute mark, I ran another twenty minutes hoping it would improve. It did not, and could not, and the data from that period was unusable.
Twenty minutes is not a disaster. But the instinct to keep collecting because you are already outside is worth naming, because it is the single most common way an evening gets worse rather than better. When the data has stopped being good, the session is finished, and the right move is to stop and dry the equipment properly.
What the night actually produced
One good Eastern Veil image at ninety minutes, slightly soft in its final third. One discarded galaxy attempt. Three habits reinforced: level with the bubble, refocus at thirty minutes, check the dew point gap before deciding session length.
That is a normal night. If your sessions look like this, nothing is wrong with your equipment or your ability. The published images that make it look otherwise are the survivors of a lot of evenings exactly like this one.
